Hola Chica!

It totally sucks to get stuck in an office after a fantastic vacation. I am still dreaming the beautiful beach, the sound of the waves, fresh seafood & frozen mango margaritas, magical sunsets and all the laziness.
R2 and I had a dreamy vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico last week. Situated on a secluded cove along the 68 k.m long Banderas Bay, Dreams Resort completely deserves its name with its location, service and excellent food.

Enough of advertising, let’s get to some fashion business. Chicas, if you are hitting the beach this summer, you gotta have a wide striped or a polka dot bikini. A wide brimmed hat and a long print dress will give you a bohemian look which is very trendy this season. Guys, a pair of wayfarers are always a good choice for you and they are very popular, and you can’t go wrong with a fedora hat!

Enjoy my pictures; I will let them do the talking.

Muchos besos!!

Red Glamour

Fall '11 seems so far away to many of us but the fashion world is already over with fall and the designers are working on the next season. Fall 2011 has many trends such as graphic art, high shine looks, lace, polka dots, tailored and lady like 60’s looks, peplum skirts & jackets, red and lots of fur. And if all these need to be explained with one word it would be GLAMOUR. It will be a very glamorous season and seems like that luxury is back since we are leaving a recession behind.
Many designers used the crimson tones in monochromatic looks in their fall collections. I picked some of my favorite reds. I sooo want a red fur, it is über chic and glamorous.

Bill Cunningham New York

In his blue jacket and khakis (he always wears the same clothes); this 82 year old man is on his bike everyday pedaling around NYC streets to capture the street style.
Bill Cunningham is a fashion photographer who has two columns on New York Times Style section -started taking pictures for Times in the late 60's- and this documentary is about him.

“Best fashion show is in on the street” he says and adds “I let the street speak to me. And in order for the street to speak to you, you’ve got to stay out there and see what it is!”
It is a very moving and interesting documentary to see, from this man’s very simple self, living in a tiny studio at Carnegie Hall with a small bed and bunch of file cabinets full of film negatives, to his lonely life devoted to his work, taking pictures. I learnt that it took more than 7 years to make this documentary because of Mr. Cunningham’s extremely private and shy personality and first 2 years was all about gaining his trust.

See this film because it makes you laugh (his 90 years old neighbor Editta Sherman is hilarious), brings tears to your eyes, educates you and opens to the doors to a very humble and shy man’s world.

Law of Attraction

Here I am sitting at the patio of Free Speech Cafe on Berkeley Campus (my fave cafe in Berkeley)  on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Cal students sitting next to my table are staring at their biology, chemistry and culture textbooks while I am staring at my "Sex and the City 2" book that I bought yesterday. I have always been a fan of this show then the movies they made and who knows how many times I watched the TV episodes over and over again. Actually I watched the SATC 2 movie twice on the same day (i know it is crazy) last weekend on HBO.
Ok back to my book, I am still looking at the cover page with a smile on my face, where Carrie Bradshaw is wearing a white Halston dress with gold Louboutin pumps, a Chanel clutch, gold aviator sunglasses and a beautiful necklace looking absolutely gorgeous - it is the same outfit for the movie's opening shot. I have a smile on my face because I have the very same white Halston dress in my shopping bag sitting next to me right now that I bought an hour ago and wondering how did it happen while I had no intention of shopping this weekend .. I think I know, it was the "law of attraction"!

let me backtrack and tell you how I got here..

I decided to have a weekend all by myself since hubby was leaving for his triathlon for the weekend. Having a mild cold and not having a quiet time all alone in the last months, I didn't make any plans so I could have the whole weekend to myself and do whatever I want to do or simply do nothing. On Saturday, while I was enjoying my day at home I had tons of carbs accompanied with my cold medicines, watched couple of Woody Allen movies, had more carbs and watched more TV and eventually I was bored and ready to go out at least to take a walk.
A quote " how quick and fragile existence is" from the Woody Allen movie I just saw (You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger) was echoing in my mind while I was walking and it was making me think all the years I spent in Berkeley.
I was walking thru the beautiful campus with that piece of nostalgia and I found myself at Urban Outfitters, a store that always make me feel like I am 20 again. They carry a lot of fun books, college games, and bohemian clothes. While I was checking out the books, I came accross with Carrie shining on the glitzy cover ..It was a SATC 2 book. the stories. the fashion (compliments to Patricia Field). the adventure.and of course I had to buy it.

And the next day which is today, a very sunny & lovely Sunday, after I had enough laziness, despite my cold I decided to go for a lunch with my new SATC 2 book in my bag. Who knows how it happened :) but I found myself in one of the stores I like in Berkeley. (I wonder if my subconscious aimed that store when I decided to go for lunch). When I entered the crowded store there it was, the white Halston dress Carrie wearing on the cover, winking at me with a sale tag. I made a very quick run to the fitting room to try it on and of course I loved it and bought it, already knowing which event I will wear it to..
BTW I totally forgot about eating with the joy of my accomplishment and wanted to enjoy the rest of the nice afternoon and decided to land on the Free Speech Cafe in the campus. And now I am sitting next to a college student complaining " i am so bored of studying, who cares about culture". I so want to tell her that graduating from college will help her to study what ever she wants to study later in life and she should enjoy the college years with no responsibility..But I shut up.

I am back to thinking about my interesting story and how related things happened back to back, and I find the explaination. It is "Law of Attraction". Similar attracts similar..You attract yourself whatever you give your focus, attention or energy whether wanted or unwanted. I believe this was what exactly happened to me this weekend, it was not buying the book or the dress but the path of the things happened.

I gotta go now, I have a lot of visualizing to do! I'd love to have the complete Jason Wu & Prabal Gurung fall'11 collections.. :)

Spring Wedges

I am so happy that after weeks of rain the weather got warmer in the city! Finally we can enjoy our spring clothes, accessories and shoes. Yaay!
Wedges and espadrille wedges are one of the biggest trends of this season and they are fun & comfortable to wear (most of the time).. Pair them with your maxi dresses and skirts, shorts and wide legged jeans & pants..Happy spring!

And if you have been wondering the difference between wedge and espadrille here is the answer:
Wedges are a type of shoe where the heel extends from the back of the shoe to the ball of the shoe, in the shape of a wedge. Espadrilles are a type of shoe where the wedge is covered with a woven rope braiding.

Balenciaga and Spain

Last week the biggest buzz in the city was the “Balenciaga and Spain” exhibit which opened its doors to the public on Saturday. This amazing exhibit features 120 pieces collected from different museums, couture collectors and Balenciaga archives and it is a must see if you are in San Francisco. It also attracted the fashion elite of the city as well as many celebrities to SF including Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Orlando Bloom and Vogue editor Anna Wintour to the opening night gala and to see the exhibit.

For me the most exciting event was the symposium examining the themes of the special exhibition “Balenciaga and Spain”. One of the guest speakers were the very stylish Hamish Bowles, who is the curator of the exhibit as well as the European editor at large for the American Vogue and the author of Balenciaga and Spain catalogue (19 of his Balenciaga pieces are in the exhibit) and he is an authority on fashion and design (I guess it is inevitable not to become an authority when you work for Vogue). And the other speakers were fashion history experts from all over the world and I was so glad to have a ticket to this sold out event. It was a looong 3.5 hour symposium without any breaks but it was so captivating that I didn’t even notice I only had a banana all day.

Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in a small fishing village in the Basque region of Spain in 1895. When he lost his father at the age of 11, he started to help his mom who was a seamstress and learnt sewing from her. He opened his first boutique in San Sebastian when he was 19, and probably his biggest step was opening the House of Balenciaga at 10 Avenue Georges V in Paris in 1937 (it was the most expensive couture house in Paris and no discounts at all -the speaker wanted us to underline the ‘most expensive’ part  5 times) . From there he was a very popular and successful designer among Parisian bourgeoisie, Spain’s royal family and celebrities of his time.

Besides him being very talented and a perfectionist, Balenciaga was a very innovative courtier and had a huge impact on fashion. He is the creator of the baby doll dress and he transformed a new silhouette for women by dropping waistlines to the hip level. But during all the years of evolving and experimenting the Balenciaga woman was always elegant and classy with a sense of style.

Pamela Golbin who was one of the speakers and she is the chief curator of the Musee de la Mode at the Louvre, shared very interesting notes about Balenciaga such as he didn’t like wearing accessories even a watch and he never carried cash with him which caused him many problems. He was very strict about copying and trade mark issues at the couture house but his staff always remembered him as a very good person with a bit of seriousness.

Balenciaga was inspired by many things throughout his career and probably his main inspiration was his native Spain and the Spanish culture. Spanish dance culture and the flamenco dancers in their ruffled dresses, bullfights and the matadors with their embellished boleros and headpieces (it is so ironic that he hated the bullfights but the color & embellishments were big inspirations), the regional dresses from his fishing village with big skirts and religious figures, the Spanish royalty and the lavish costumes they wore in the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish art and painters like Goya, Picasso and Miro, and couturiers of his time such as Madeliene Vionnet and Coco Chanel.

Christian Dior called him “master of all” and Coco Chanel “the only couturier”, Balenciaga has been a mentor and inspiration to many designers. (Ungaro and Givenchy learnt from him). He constantly searched and accomplished the technical mastery and once he told Givenchy “a ruffle must me intelligent”. Even this sentence says a lot about him.
He died in 1972 after a heart attack.

After the symposium and learning all these valuable information I was very moved and inspired, and I was full of admiration for this master and couldn’t wait to see the exhibit.  But one little detail was, I had to go and get ready for the opening night Gala at de Young museum and I was getting late.
The ArtPoint Balenciaga opening night gala was a real celebration.  I could feel the energy and excitement of this big event in the air and everyone looked fabulous, especially the ones in their vintage Balenciagas, and it was a proof that SF can be and is a fashion forward city and we all get excited about fashion. I have to say it felt especially special to see the marvelous exhibit in our chic outfits during the party, I bet Cristóbal Balenciaga would be so proud of everyone celebrating this event if he was there. At the end of the night my heels were killing me but I was so inspired and grateful to spend a wonderful Saturday.

"A fashion designer must be an architect for perspectives, a sculptor for shapes, a painter for color, a musician for harmony and a philosopher for a sense of proportion".. Cristóbal Balenciaga
